The game of Golf was originally played and developed by the Scottish-men. They were the first to develop permanent golf clubs, frame rules of the game and build an 18-hole golf-course. But, later on the game gained a lot of popularity and fascinated people all over the world, especially the English-men and the Americans. At present, there are about 32,000 golf-courses in the world which is enough to depict the popularity of the game. Traditionally, older men formed a major composition of the golf-clubs but with the passage of time youngsters have also developed an inclination towards the game. They have condemned against the strict dress code that their ancestors followed and have started placing more emphasis on the physical fitness of the players.

The game is played in a golf course that is composed of teeing-area, fairway, hazards (like bunkers and water-hazards) with the pin and cup. A standard golf-course has 18 holes and a golfer has to rest the golf-ball inside the hole using his club in lesser number of strokes than his other fellow-golfers to win the competition. The golfers use motorized carts to drive along the golf-course. They are accompanied by their caddies, who carry their golf-equipments, which consists of the heavy clubs, namely, woods, irons, putter to execute a variety of shots, golf-balls and pair of golf-shoes. A game could be a match play or a stroke-play, latter being the pick of the professionals.

The rules of the game are jointly framed by R&A and USGA to ensure a fair play and the professional-golfers must abide by these sets of guidelines or else it would amount to violation of Golf ethics. The golfers have to keep their body in a good alignment to execute good swings. They have to place their feet and the golf-ball in a correct position before execution of the shot. They must also have a good grip of their club before the execution of the final swing. A large number of professionals have emerged in this sport and not only there are men’s tournaments like The Masters, US Open, The Open Championship, PGA Championship, etc, but the women’s have also actively participated in the game and have had many tournaments like the LPGA Tour, US Women’s Open, British Women’s Open.

The history of Golf has also witnessed professionals like Tiger Woods, who made a luscious career out of the game and become the ‘Highest paid athlete in the world’ and inspired the youth to take up golf as their career. The game is very popular among the successful corporate also; it serves as their status symbol. The game is generally associated with rich people these days, and golf-clubs have a high fee. It gives way to a regular interaction and a long chat between the members which helps in building a good network for business also. This sport is even taken up as a part of the Management syllabus in leading B-schools as it is considered as a good leisure sport which brings one closer to nature and people.
